Berlin is a city which you must visit soon - and so why not add to the experience by seeing Berlin in the run up to Christmas? There is no better time to take in the vibrant atmosphere and style of Berlin PLUS enjoy the added attractions of at least 60 different Christmas market locations in the city.

Wherever you are in Berlin, you will not be far from the magic of vendors' stalls selling special and unusual Christmas gifts. In the market squares, boulevards, side streets and even inside museums - all are places where the traditional Christmas is celebrated.

Berlin’s largest Christmas Market can be found in the Spandau Old Town, a historic location. Here you can find up to 250 stands on weekdays and an extraordinary 400+ each weekend during Advent. There is also a stage programme with a Rock concert on Friday evenings and other entertainment during the week. Reformationsplatz has a Christmas crib with live animals. There is a special range for children and families around St. Nikolai church. Amongst the most well-known of the markets is the Charlottenburg Castle Christmas Market. For 35 days the castle and its park are bathed in suffused light, and inside you can find up to 150 booth representing locations from all over Germany as well as abroad. Here, the Christmas Market offers carefully selected traditional arts and crafts as well as traditional gastronomy in decorated cabins and fine glass pagodas.

Another market you should not miss is the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market, which is housed in one of the most beautiful squares in the city. You can learn a great deal about traditional handicrafts such as flax embroidery, wood carving and stone carving from experts who demonstrate their trade here. Adding a lively touch to proceedings, you will find jugglers, acrobats, dance troupes, choirs, Berlin classical, jazz and Gospel ensembles, as well as internationally famous artists and an much else in a varied programme.

Meanwhile, on the Sony Centre’s 4,000 square metre event area, the Potsdamer Platz Christmas Market offers an upbeat, lively time. Plenty of lights, handicrafts, music and eating delicacies are all in the mix. There is a large handicrafts market along Alte Potsdamer Straße as well as an ice rink and mobile toboggan run - 12 metres high and 70 metres long.

Roasted almonds, hot cocoa and mulled wine are the order of the day at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Christmas Market, near the Kurfürstendamm. Here, over 160 craft and Christmas market stands feature daily around the historical church in the centre of City West.Here you can find everything, from Christmas decorations and ornaments to toys and delicate jewellery. You can also enjoy glazed fruit or grilled sausages and a 20 metre high Christmas tree.

There are many other locations amongst the 60+ markets, including the Staatsoper and Opernpalais and the very popular Christmas Market on the boulevard Unter den Linden. You are spoiled for choice!

You can travel by train from the UK to Berlin using daytime trains or – saving you a night’s hotel stay – by sleeper train. City Night Line trains leave Paris in the evening and deliver you to central Berlin with a whole new day ahead of you. Alternatively, you can take a Eurostar to Brussels, then a daytime Thalys train onwards to Cologne. From there you can connect to a luxurious ICE train for the final leg to Berlin. It’s the perfect opportunity to stop over in Cologne first.
