In all there are over 20 Christmas Markets which take place throughout the city of Munich. These includes a Medieval Christmas Market with a gospel choir and festival at the Wittelsbacher Platz and a gay pink Christmas Market (Stephansplatz). There is even a Christmas Market with ice skating facilities at Munich’s international airport.
Munich's focal Christmas Market, with roots in the 14th century, takes place on the Marienplatz in the city centre. The Munich Christmas Market has a wide variety of Bavarian Christmas gifts reflecting regional traditions, including wood carvings from Oberammergau, gingerbread (Lebkuchen) from Nuremberg and exquisite glassware from the Bavarian Forest. Other traditional Christmas gift ideas on display include bees' wax candles, crib figurines, and chimney sweeps made of plums and almonds. Amongst thousands of other ideas, you will find ideal gifts for all the family, solving all your Christmas gift needs in an enjoyable day or two.
A special feature which everyone enjoys, is the daily festive season celebration with a special alpine Christmas Market concert from the balcony of Munich’s town hall. Meanwhile, in the Town Hall itself, a ”Heavenly Workshop” gives children between the ages of 6 and 12 fun with arts and crafts or baking Christmas treats. Great fun are the gossamer wings and gowns which allow children to dress up as angels - at least in appearance!
Another popular choice is the Kripperlmarkt, one of the largest in Germany to specialise in cribs and other nativity accessories. This Christmas Market is a short walk away on nearby Rindermarkt and has been part of Munich‘s traditional Christmas Markets since the middle of the 18th century. Here, visitors can create an authentic manger. Christmas mangers, cribs and nativity scenes have been a tradition for a long time in Munich, deriving from 1597 when the Jesuits first created s a manger in St Michael’s church and embellished in 1757 when the first original Kripperlmarkt Christmas market was established.
Ringing the changes is Munich´s ethnic festival, which offers something out of ordinary. This is the Tollwood Christmas Market on the Theresienwiese where international musicians and drama groups offer performances, live music, art and culture as well as popular Christmas Market fare with handicrafts and food ideas from all over the world.
