About the markets Every year in the Advent season towns and cities in Germany come to life with their traditional Christmas markets. Every market reveals a unique flair with lovely decorated booths, musical performances, the smell of baker's goods and mulled wine as well as their numerous special events.
Increasingly, travellers all over the world are magically attracted by the promise of a few days of Christmas as it used to be.
Known in Germany as Weihnachtsmärkte or Christkindlmärkte, Christmas markets have been a mainstay of Germany's Advent season for more than 500 years. Dresden's Christmas market dates back at least to 1434, and others are nearly as old.
These days millions of Germans and foreign visitors drink hot spiced Glühwein, eat fine sausages, shop for gifts and ornaments, and enjoy musical or carnival-style entertainment at large and small Christmas markets across Germany.
